| On June 2nd, 2005, almost three weeks after graduation from St. Joseph’s University, Kristin Mitchell intended to end her relationship with her boyfriend. As usual, the entire day was interrupted by countless calls and text messages from her soon-to-be-ex boyfriend. That evening, in an email to her father, Kristin wrote, "It is just really hard to deal with someone who seemed to be getting more and more controlling and not giving me space to be me... I guess I was trying to stay positive and recognize the good things in him. There are a lot. But this is on my mind right now..." Early on June 3rd, this same man came to Kristin's apartment. She made a frantic call to a friend saying things were not going well. She said he wouldn't leave, and that she didn't know what to do. She never finished that call. The events as they occurred are not known, but Kristin was brutally overtaken by this man and savagely murdered. She was stabbed at least 55 times. Eleven times to her back. Almost eleven months later, on April 20, 2006, Kristin’s killer pleaded guilty in a courtroom, and received a 30-year prison term. He is scheduled to come before a parole board at the 15-year mark. It is entirely possible, and astounding to realize, that he could actually be set free in the year 2020, for his horrific murder of Kristin. Sadly, Kristin is not an exception to this horrendous act. Domestic violence takes a terrible toll on young women across America… |
